Roadside Risk Scoring Tool
The Roadside Risk Scoring Tool (RRST) is a practical, repeatable method for assessing and prioritising roadside hazard severity across a road network. It was developed by Austroads to support road safety engineers in identifying barrier, clear-zone, and treatment priorities aligned with Safe System principles.
Scores roadside hazards on a five-level scale using geometric, traffic, and roadside-object data. Outputs feed into treatment prioritisation and network-level investment planning.
- Road safety engineers undertaking network screening
- Asset managers prioritising barrier upgrades
- Designers assessing proposed roadside treatments
- Auditors validating Safe System alignment
Bulk-imports corridor data, applies the scoring model, and exports risk-ranked segments to CSV. Supports comparison of pre- and post-treatment scenarios.
Use RRST when you need to:
- Screen a network to identify the highest-risk roadside sections
- Build a barrier or clear-zone investment case
- Compare treatment options on the same corridor
- Validate Safe System assessment findings for roadside risk
RRST is most effective when combined with AusRAP star ratings and crash data for the same corridors.
The tool is delivered as a web application. Typical workflow:
- Prepare corridor data in the required format (see RRST Manual)
- Upload the dataset to the web app
- Review automatic scores and adjust calibration parameters if required
- Export the results and integrate into your treatment prioritisation process
