Guide to Road Safety - Part 5: Safe Vehicles

Safe Vehicles Passenger Vehicle Occupants Heavy Vehicle Occupants

Part 5 of the Guide to Road Safety addresses the Safe Vehicles element — the vehicle-safety standards, ratings and technologies that reduce both the likelihood of a crash and the severity of injury when one occurs. It covers primary safety features that help avoid crashes (such as autonomous emergency braking, lane support and intelligent speed assistance) and secondary features that protect occupants and other road users during a crash.

This part explains how vehicle-safety rating systems such as ANCAP inform purchasing and fleet policy, how fleet procurement can accelerate the uptake of safer vehicles across the national fleet, and how vehicle safety interacts with the safe-roads and safe-speed elements. It gives practitioners and policy-makers a basis for using vehicle-safety levers within a coordinated Safe System program.
