Overview & Abstract

This recorded webinar features Austroads experts unpacking how Safe System principles translate from policy into the everyday decisions practitioners make on projects. It walks through worked examples — speed-zoning a high-school precinct, retrofitting a rural undivided road, and prioritising treatments across a metropolitan local-government area — to show where the four pillars (safe roads, safe speeds, safe vehicles, safe road users) intersect and where trade-offs need to be negotiated explicitly.

The session is aimed at engineers, planners, and project managers who already work with the Safe System vocabulary but want a more rigorous frame for design and assessment. Topics covered include matching treatment selection to crash type, using kinetic-energy thresholds as a design check, sequencing Phase 1 and Phase 2 treatments under a constrained budget, and communicating Safe System outcomes to non-technical stakeholders. A short Q and A at the end addresses common pushback (we do not have the crash data, the community will not accept lower speeds) with practical responses drawn from recent Austroads projects.
