Guide to Road Safety - Part 6: Road Safety Audit

Safe Roads & Roadsides

Part 6 of the Guide to Road Safety provides guidance on road safety audit — the formal, independent examination of a road project or existing road for its crash potential and safety performance. It sets out the audit process across the project lifecycle, from feasibility and design through to pre-opening and existing-road audits, and how audit findings feed back into safer design decisions.

The part covers the procurement and management of audits, the composition and independence of audit teams, the conduct of the audit and reporting, and the response and decision process for acting on findings. It is a practical reference for road authorities, designers and auditors seeking to embed Safe System thinking into the assessment of road infrastructure.
