Project Overview

This multi-year Austroads project supports state and territory road agencies in developing Network Safety Plans aligned to the National Road Safety Strategy 2021-2030 targets. The work has three streams: a common analytical method for screening road networks by risk, a transferable decision framework for selecting Safe System-aligned treatments, and a shared reporting structure so jurisdictional plans can be rolled up to national progress indicators without re-coding each underlying dataset.

The project is being delivered in partnership with each jurisdictional road authority and draws on independent peer review at each major milestone. Outputs include a methodology guideline, worked examples for urban, regional and remote network contexts, a sample five-year network safety plan template, and a set of national progress indicators that link directly to the jurisdiction-level KPIs. Findings are being progressively published as Austroads research reports, with the final consolidated guidance scheduled for release in 2027.
