Overview & Abstract

This webinar takes participants through the complete speed-management decision chain — from setting jurisdiction-level targets, through network-level prioritisation, down to individual road-section speed-limit decisions and the signing and engineering that gives them effect. It is structured around the Speed Management chapter of the Austroads Guide to Road Safety, with case studies showing how each step has been applied in three Australian jurisdictions over the past 24 months.

Particular attention is given to the harder middle-tier choices: harmonising urban speed limits across municipal boundaries, applying movement-and-place principles to high-street main-road conflicts, and balancing freight productivity with vulnerable-user safety on rural highways. The session closes with a discussion of monitoring and evaluation — what to measure, how often, and what to do when the data shows a speed-management intervention is not producing the expected crash-rate change.
